May 3rd Cozumel´s 503 Year Anniversary
Note I did not use the word discovery. In my old age I have come to some alternative thoughts, such as how can you discover an existing civilization in the same context as discovering a cure or a new element in science.
These discoveries always resulted in destruction of irreplaceable knowledge, cultures, and languages. In the case of Columbus discovering my homeland of the island of Hispaniola (The Dominican Republic and Haiti), resulted in extinction of the natives.
About Cozumel
Cozumel is a Mayan word that means “Land of the Swallows.”, As the Swallows are common birds in this region. The island is about 48 km (30 mi) long and 16 km (9.9 mi) wide. Cozumel is Mexico’s largest Caribbean island.
The island has a large mangrove forest containing many endemic animal species. Cozumel is a flat island based on limestone, resulting in a karst topography. The highest natural point on the island is less than 15 m (49 ft) above sea level. There are many cenotes. A cenote is a deep water-filled sinkholes. It is formed by the water percolating through the soft limestone soil over thousands of years. To dive in Cozumel’s cenotes you must be a qualified cave diver with appropriate credentials.
Cozumel History
The first Mayan settlers settled in Cozumel approximately 2,000 years ago. During the post-classic period, the Mayans used the island as a place to worship Ixchel, the goddess of fertility.
The Spaniards Arrive
In 1518, Juan de Grijalva was the first Spaniard to arrive on the island. The following year Hernán Cortés landed on these coasts and met the only survivor of the shipwreck of a previous expedition, Jerónimo de Aguilar. Cortés took Aguilar with him to the rest of the conquest as an interpreter. See History of Cozumel.
When Cortés left Cozumel, the ancient civilization was already in ruins. Smallpox almost wiped out the native population. Between 1519 and 1570 the population of the island decreased from 40,000 to 30. The uninhabited island served as a refuge to some pirates.
World War II
During World War II the United States built an air base in Cozumel and used its crystal-clear waters as a training ground for their frogmen. This unveiled the natural wonders of the island.
Diving Destination
Oceanographer Jacques Cousteau later proclaimed Cozumel to be one of the best places to dive in the world, which helped position it as one of the best diving destinations in the world.
