Cozumel Beaches Safer than ever
The activities implemented by the Municipal Government through the Directorate of Civil Protection, “Guardavidas” area, has successfully decreased the number of emergencies on the high-risk beaches of the island according to Lucio Alejandro Canul Andrade. He reported that during this administration, from its inception until last February 24 of this year, lifeguards have made a total of 48 saves of local and visitors, both domestic and foreign.
He explained that in 2013 area lifeguards performed a total 98 saves, while in 2014, there were only 37. The reduction is the result of permanent actions such as placing signs in Spanish and English on the beaches that pose the greatest risk, mainly in San Martin, which is considered the most dangerous. Lifeguards also provide the relevant information on the status of the sea and the danger thereof, verbally to bathers. Lifeguards receive frequent training and have to re-certify annually to effectively exercise their duties and responsibilities as lifeguards.
He said that of the 37 rescues in 2014, 29 were in San Martin Beach; three in Las Rocas Beach; four in Chen Río Beach and one in Caletita Beach. The rescued were 21 foreign tourists, 5 national tourist, and 11 local residents. Of the 37 rescued, 26 were men and 11 were women.
